SGA-SEG-IUGS-UNESCO Short Courses on African metallogeny

Our Metallogeny Short Courses have been organized for more than 10 years on the African continent. Previous short courses were held in Morocco, Ruanda, Burkina Faso, Gabon, Ivory Coast, Namibia, South Africa, and Senegal. In 2026, the Algerian team hosts the short course.

Our short courses have different topics adapted to the host countries and wider region.

The aims of these short courses are:

  • increasing the knowledge of the major geomaterial developments in Africa and to acquire mining and exploration technical skills;

  • providing a critical view of the ore deposits and mining in Africa, applying, in addition, sensor and artificial intelligence on geoscience, mining and processing sector, with a view to optimize workflows and increase resource efficiency;

  • helping the participants to learn about material value chains.

The 5 days training consists of 2.5 days of lectures and workshops and 2.5 days of mine visits and field training. Target audiences are geologists and engineers in exploration and mining companies, and those from the processing sector, geological surveys, PhD and MSc students, researchers, and university lecturers.

The short courses are principally organised by SGA, with co-sponsorship from SEG and IUGS, and in some instances from UNESCO. Students can apply for financial support (application form, motivation letter). Additionally, registration fees and sponsorships from mining companies are necessary to make these short courses affordable.
