The 10th SGA-SEG-IUGS-UNESCO African Metallogeny Short Course was organized and celebrated at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, from June 20 to 26. The event was a resounding success, thanks to the outstanding organization by the local team led by Prof. Gbenga Okunlola and Prof. Olatunji Akinade.
The University of Ibadan, ranked as the 4th best university in Africa, continues to demonstrate strong ambition in international capacity building and scientific networking.
High-level workshops, lectures, and panel discussions on “Understanding the Value Chain Possibilities of West-Central African Mineral, Energy, and Geoheritage Potentials” highlighted the vast potential of critical and strategic metal resources in Nigeria and across Africa.
Approximately 50 participants attended the course, including:
30 graduate students from across Nigeria, Liberia, and Algeria
Young career engineers from academia, private companies, and government organizations from Nigeria, Senegal, Cameroon, and Algeria
Exciting field excursions were organized to key sites in Osun and Ekiti States, Nigeria:
- The operational Segilola Gold Mine (SROL Company), Osun State, offering participants firsthand insight into active mining operations.
- The natural springs, waterfalls, and warm and cold springs of Ikogesi, Ekiti State — a unique geological and hydrothermal site.
- The newly established Hill Side University, Okemesi, Ekiti State, showcasing emerging infrastructure for education and research in the region.
The success of this short course was made possible through the support of numerous Nigerian partners, who sponsored local student travel, accommodation, and transport, as well as full stays for international speakers and organizers. SGA-SEG-IUGS-CATURA sponsorships covered travel expenses for all participants and lecturers from outside Nigeria.
